Professional Certificate Programs
(An integrated curriculum of credit courses totaling 140 or more hours of instruction)
Completing a Professional Certificate Program represents a major personal achievement and indicates to employers a serious commitment to lifelong learning and professional advancement. Professional Certificate Programs provide in-depth academic study of a professional field and prepare individuals to enter a new career or advance within their current profession. Curricula are designed to address the full range of subjects within a discipline, allowing students to develop a fundamental knowledge of the field as well as study specialized individual topics. Courses are graded and require exams and out-of-class assignments. Most courses qualify for employer-paid assistance or tuition reimbursement. Professional Certificate Programs generally take from one to three years to complete. Formal application and acceptance to the program is required.
Professional Sequence Awards
(A series of credit and/or noncredit courses totaling 90 or more hours of instruction)
Professional Sequence Awards offer concentrated, accelerated study of an individual subject or cluster of related subjects. Earning a Professional Sequence Award enables students to update and upgrade specific skill areas quickly and provides evidence to employers of recent, specialized study. Courses carry professional credit or CEU's and most qualify for employer-paid assistance or tuition reimbursement. Professional Sequence Awards are generally earned within three quarters or less. Formal application to the program is required.
Certificate Program Application Procedure
To be accepted as a candidate in a certificate program, students must first submit
an Application for Candidacy and one-time, nonrefundable filing fee. Candidacy
forms, filing fees, and procedures for applying are outlined in each of the
certificate program brochures along with program requirements and course transfer/substitution
policies. Students are urged to file their Application for Candidacy anytime
before completing their third course. Students will be expected to fulfill
program requirements in place at the time candidacy is filed. Students will
automatically be notified of acceptance once the application and filing fee
are received. Allow four to six weeks for applications to be processed. Acceptance
letters are mailed upon acceptance into the program.
Certificate candidates must notify the UCSB Extension certificate advisor
by phoning (805) 893-3816 or by e-mailing certificates@els.ucsb.edu when
they receive the grade card for their final course. Once your final grade is
received and your records are checked to verify that you have met all program
requirements, your certificate is processed and mailed to you. Duplicate certificates
are available if requested in writing. There is a $22 charge for each duplicate
certificate. For further information regarding certificate program policies
