English Language Programs Participants Program Description

The Summer 2008 Program for International Students (SPIS) administered by UCSB Extension, allows international students to enroll in UCSB summer courses held on campus.   Experience the rewards of learning from distinguished faculty.   Students pay for courses on a per unit basis, and earn transferable units – all without being formally admitted to UCSB.

SPIS is ideal if you are thinking about studying at a major research university in the U.S., need to finish a few units to complete a degree, need to study specific subjects related to your professional field, or just wish to take courses for personal enrichment.

Courses

All courses are open on a space available basis.   Permission from the professor may be required for select courses.   Participants are responsible for meeting all course prerequisites listed in the UCSB General Catalog (www.catalog.ucsb.edu), and English Language proficiency requirements.   Students should be prepared to provide evidence to the professor or department that prerequisites have been satisfied.

Degrees and Degree Credit

UCSB Extension does not grant degrees, nor are degrees awarded through SPIS enrollment.   However, credits earned may be applied at another university.   If you are seeking a degree at another university, please consult the advisor at your home institution regarding the transfer of course work and units earned through SPIS.

Students participating in SPIS do not receive priority for formal admission to UCSB, nor does enrollment constitute admission to the University of California.   If you are interested in earning a degree from UCSB, contact the Office of Admissions on campus for application procedures and deadlines.

Audience

New Students and Returning Students:

  • International students from foreign countries
  • Students who have attended either the UCSB Extension University Immersion (UIP) or the UCSB Extension English Language Program, Advanced Level 2 after an absence

Continuing Students:

  • Attendees of the previous spring UCSB Extension UIP
  • Graduates of the previous spring UCSB Extension English Language Program, Advanced Level 2, Exit Assessment 70

Non-UC International Students – from foreign countries must enroll for summer courses through the UCSB Extension Summer 2008 Program for International Students.

Prospective students from foreign countries considering traveling to the U.S. using a Visitors (B-2 or other visitor status) visa should note that U.S. immigration regulations do not allow individuals to enter the U.S. with a Visitors visa when the primary purpose is to pursue full-time study.

Full time student status is required for the F1 Visa. The minimum unit requirement is:
Session A or B:
6 units graduate (course numbers 200-299) or
8 units undergraduate (course numbers 1-199) or
8 units postgraduate, (course numbers 300-499) or
8 units graduate, undergraduate, and postgraduate combination

Session C:
8 units graduate or
12 units undergraduate or
12 units postgraduate, or
12 units graduate, undergraduate, and postgraduate combination

Note: Most UCSB Summer Sessions courses offer 3-4 units.

Students from foreign countries already in the U.S. in a valid immigrations status (i.e. as an F-1 student at another institution, or in another valid non-immigrant status) should consult the immigration advisor at UCSB Extension before attending the UCSB Extension SPIS program.

All students having non-immigrant visas are required to carry health insurance for themselves and any family members who accompany them to Santa Barbara.

For an appointment with the immigration advisor please email njzinner@els.ucsb.edu or call (805) 893-3816.

Dropping Courses/Withdrawal Procedures

It is your responsibility to petition to drop a course you are enrolled in. To formally drop a course, you must complete the Petition for Drop/Withdrawal, notify the professor of your intentions, and have him/her sign the petition. Requests to drop must be received at UCSB Extension no later than 4pm on the established deadline date (see Fees and Deadlines ). Courses dropped prior to this deadline will not appear on your permanent transcript record. Students who file drop petitions by the drop deadline are eligible for a full refund of their course fees.

The W grade will be assigned when a student receives permission to drop a course after the drop deadline. In order to request permission to drop a course after the drop deadline, you must submit the Petition for Late Drop/Withdrawal to the UCSB Extension Student Services office along with written documentation of extenuating circumstances and the required fee. The instructor must endorse dropping the course after the deadline. Exceptions to the published drop deadline are granted only in very unusual and compelling circumstances. Permission to drop after the deadline can only be granted by Extended Learning Services. Failure to formally withdraw from a course you do not wish to complete will result in an F or NP grade being recorded.

Cancellation/Withdrawal from SPIS Program

If you find it necessary to withdraw from all courses in SPIS after the first day of instruction you must file a Petition for Complete Cancellation/Withdrawal. It must be completed and taken to UCSB Extension Student Services for approval, and filing with Registrar. There are no refunds for courses dropped after the deadlines.

When undergraduate students submit a petition after the deadline for course withdrawal, the Office of the Registrar will enter a grade of W for each course in which the student was enrolled. Authorization to drop courses or completely withdraw after the Drop Deadline, is ordinarily granted only in cases of illness, changes in employment, or acute personal difficulty.

Your are advised to seek counsel from faculty, departmental or college advisers, and/or Counseling and Career Services before withdrawing, in order to consider the full implications of the action.

If you discontinue class attendance without processing a drop or Complete Cancellation/Withdrawal on or before the Drop deadline, or without approval of the college Dean or UCSB Extension after the Drop Deadline, you receive a grade of F, NP or U as appropriate, in the course.
