How to Apply for an F-1 Student Visa

International students studying full-time at UCSB Extension require an F-1 Student Visa.

Steps to obtain an F-1 Student Visa:
1. You will receive an I-20 Form (this is your Certificate of Eligibility for an F-1 Student Visa) once you are accepted into a program at UCSB Extension. The I-20 Form is required in order to apply for an F-1 Student Visa. We will send the I-20 Form to the address on your application for enrollment.

2. Upon receipt of your I-20 Form, you will need to arrange for an appointment with the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in your home country. It may take several weeks to schedule your interview.

3. Once you have received your I-20 Form and prior to your appointment with the U.S. Embassy or Consulate, you must complete the Form I-901 and pay the $100 SEVIS fee to the “Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement.” For additional information, please see the U.S. Embassy Web site (www.travel.state.gov).

Go to www.fmjfee.com and follow the directions for payment. A receipt (Form I-797) will be sent to you after you pay your SEVIS payment. If you pay online, you can print a receipt directly from your computer.
Note: The SEVIS fee can only be paid by mail or the Internet.

4. It is required that you bring your I-20 Form and the receipt of your SEVIS payment to your appointment with the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in your home country.

The United States immigration laws change frequently. We encourage you to contact the U.S. Consulate in your home country for current information.
